FileZilla

FileZilla is a versatile, free FTP client that can be downloaded from filezilla-project.org.

Why is FileZilla better than Total Commander?

Total Commander is a file manager for local computers that can connect to remote FTP servers. FileZilla is an FTP manager program designed to facilitate the exchange of data between your computer and a remote FTP server. An important feature of FileZilla is the possibility of multi-threaded upload/download, which speeds up copying for many small files (e.g. Joomla), and automatic resumption of interrupted uploads, which can reliably upload/download selected files even in case of slow, intermittent Internet connections.

In summary, FileZilla is a good choice for all cases where you want to copy many files at once between your computer and a remote FTP server, while Total Commander is a convenient solution for copying a single file at a time.

How to use FileZilla

At first glance, its structure is more complicated than Total Commander's, so we've prepared an explanation of its structure to make it easier to understand.

This is what you see after starting the program:

Steps to use the programme:

1) Enter the FTP hostname, ID, password in the input fields under "FTP login information" and click Connect.

2) If you have entered the correct information, the program will log you into the remote server, which you can track in the "FTP traffic log" section.

3) In the "Local and remote directories" fields, select the desired source and destination directories on your local machine (left) and on the remote FTP server (right).

4) Under "Local and Remote Files", use your mouse to select the desired files or directories, right-click on the selection and start the upload or download.

Once you have started the operation, you can monitor the copying process in the Upload/Download Status window.

You can find the FTP details for your site in the Client Gateway interface.
